If you are in Kingston-upon-Hull Sunday, September 25, 2016, pop into the impressive St Mary's along from the city's old market place.
The city centre and market area is in the process of being rejuvenated for Hull's year as the country's City of Culture 2017. So bear in mind that parts of the city centre are still work in progress.
St Mary's is hosting a Hull International Brigade Memorial Group event Sunday and it promises to be good.
St Mary's is across from what used to be the city's main post office but is now a Wetherspoon's pub restaurant called Three John Scott's. "For most of the 19th century, St Mary's Church, opposite this Wetherspoon pub, was run by three successive vicars, all called John Scott" resulting in the pub name.
Joe Solo who performed at the Jeremy Corbyn rally in the city's Queen's Gardens Summer 2016 will be performing again. At the Corbyn rally his "mischief" was getting the crowd to perform a fist in the air salute in recognition of the ongoing fight against fascism and in memory of those who died fighting in the Spanish Civil War.
The three thousand or so people in the crowd responded as one giving TV crews and the nearby local BBC studios something to talk about.
Eight men left Hull to fight in the Spanish civil war which began in 1936 and locals have been pushing for a fitting memorial for years.
The event at St Mary's is one of a series of events raising money for the memorial.
Tickets are £5.80 at eventbrite but will be available on the day at the door.
A Hull International Brigades Memorial Group event, with Joe Solo playing songs from his wonderful album No Pasaran and Na Mara playing tunes and weaving stories and histories linked to Guernica and the Basque children of 1937 who came to the UK to escape the bombing of Bilbao by Franco's fascist allies. This concert is one of a series of events held to raise money for a fitting outside memorial to the eight men from Hull who fought in the Sapanish Civil War.
