John Ferrett says #GoodbyeLabour

Councillor John Ferrett has said #GoodbyeLabour and yes in true old new Labour style he has done it very publicly on Twitter.

Mr Ferrett was part of our three part mini-series last week following his often abusive activity on social media. In some cases it was not really abusive in my opinion but it was the sort of activity which has resulted in friends and other party members being suspended from the Labour party, excluded a vote in the leadership election, and thus barred from conference.

Mr Ferrett on the other hand has been able to meet up with like-minded plotters at conference in Liverpool if so inclined.

Monday he is grabbing his 15 minutes of fame in the mainstream media but did he jump or was he pushed?

As the Labour Party Compliance Unit works its way through a series of allegations of abuse Mr Ferrett must have posed a huge problem.

He has been openly antagonistic toward Mr Corbyn and people who support him. His younger brother quit his council role last year; the brothers agree on their hostile opinion of Corbyn.

But perhaps the BBC report is telling.

Labour controlled Portsmouth City Council in the late 1990s, but Mr Ferrett had led a group which had fallen to just three by the elections of 2014.
Mr Ferrett said he made the decision to resign "with a heavy heart".
"Labour traditionally has had fairly strong base in Portsmouth but the last five years, even under Ed Miliband, it's been really really hard to establish Labour as a credible party and now under Jeremy Corbyn we'd find it almost impossible to win in places like Portsmouth.

"John Ferrett had been a member of the party for 27 years and stood in general elections in 2010 and 2015."

If Mr Ferrett's heart is not in the job it is time to move on.

If it will be too tough a task for him he needs to give others a chance. They may fail but we need someone who at least gives a damn and is prepared to try.

But will Mr Ferrett stay on as a councillor switching political parties or even standing as an Independent?

With his recent tweet about standing shoulder to shoulder with Tory MP Anna Soubry a political party switch could be on the cards.

However in his resignation letter to party General Secretary Iain McNicol shown below John Ferrett calls for the creation of a new political party but perhaps that is just part of the long standing "chicken coup" and was always on the cards.
